97. Future Tripping and a Taoist Story

I share a simple Taoist story that I feel applies to a LDS mixed faith marriage.

I have seen clients get very concerned about what may happen in the future. The concern may even cause harm and damage in the relationship today.

In the podcast I share two examples of how we can let future tripping trip us up in a mixed faith marriage.

96. Sunk Costs in a Mormon Mixed Faith Marriage

Let’s talk about sunk costs in a mixed faith marriage.

In this episode I describe a sunk cost fallacy and how it might be showing up in your mixed faith marriage.

The sunk costs fallacy describes the tendency to follow through if we have already invested, time, money or effort into it, whether or not the current costs outweigh the benefits.

I give a few suggestions on how to not let sunk costs stop you from having the life and marriage you want.

95. The Story You Are Telling About Your Mixed Faith Marriage

In this podcast episode I teach a concept from my online course – Loving and Strengthening Your Mixed Faith Marriage. The concept is that of bringing awareness to the story you are telling about your mixed faith marriage. Often a faith transition can trigger the start of a negative story and then it perpetuates for months and even years if we don’t develop the awareness around our own stories.

94. Assumptions and Subtext in Communication

I think it’s not uncommon for 80% of communication to be assumptions and subtext and 20% to be direct and verbal. I suggest that in a mixed faith marriage you may want to flip that around and bring more communication into the explicit and verbal to avoid hurt and frustration. In this podcast I talk about how to develop awareness around your assumptions and how to make them more direct.

93. Couple Counseling

In this week’s podcast I talk about my recent experience with couples counseling. I share some general guidelines on when to use one on one work versus couples counseling. I also share some ideas on how to get the most out of couples counseling.

92. Pendulum Effect

In this episode I describe what I call the pendulum effect in a mixed faith marriage. Often a spouse who has deconstructed their beliefs may appear to be wildly swinging around but really they are on a pendulum that will eventually find rest. I share a few ideas if this is happening in your mixed faith marriage.

91. Substance Use in Your Mixed Faith Marriage

Alcohol, cannabis, psilocybin and other substances may be new topics of discussion in your mixed faith marriage. These topics can be very polarizing. In this episode I will outline the main viewpoints I have seen on both sides and offer some ideas for consideration.

90. Grief and Trust

As I continue to do my own work on being in a mixed faith marriage I realized I needed to revisit grief. For me, trust and betrayal were hiding/masking grief. If you feel your trust has been violated or you have been betrayed in your mixed faith marriage you will want to listen to this episode.

89. Honesty in Communication

A mixed faith marriage opens the door to some pretty serious conversation. Conversations about values, parenting, eternity, etc. In retrospect I would have approached my mixed faith marriage and talking about my issues with the church in a completely different way. In this podcast I talk about using your judgment to know when to talk about heavier and harder topics and when to wait.
